Coder Academy are sponsoring GovHack this year.
If you don’t already know, GovHack is a hackathon where you get to play around with government data to make a project over the weekend. Founded by Pia Waugh, it’s mission is to encourage open government, and more accessible data for all. More and more government agencies participate every year, throwing open access to data.
Of course, people have made visualisations, websites, web apps and apps out of the data provided, but they’re even created art, jewellery, a digital sign, a board game, historic film pieces, a virtual reality game, a 3d model, and a data journalism article over the years.
There are 46 hours to create a project page, proof of concept and a video that describes the concept of the project.
You could work together with entrepreneurs, developers, data analysts, engineers, designers, digital media creators, artists, film makers, story tellers, academics, researchers, youth and civic enthusiasts.
One project, the Open Budget, which visualises how the federal government spends money, helped encourage the Treasury to make budget data easily accessible in 2014. This was the first time.
Current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as of publishing, said one of 2013's hacks inspired the government's energy ratings app, which was released a year ago.
A 2013 Lateral Economics report suggested the Australian economy would grow by an extra $16 billion a year if government agencies made most of their data freely available to the public.
What are we sponsoring?
An Acceleration Award to the value of $500, and refreshments in the form of Messina & Coffee.
