Mindset. Mindset. Mindset.

It’s going to be hard graft. This means you really need to think about those big career questions.

  • Why do you want to make the change?

  • What will a career as a coder offer you that your current path doesn’t?

  • What matters to you as an employee? Is it something you could get out of your current career? Why haven’t you yet?

  • Are you willing to set everything else aside for 9 months as you establish your new pathways?

  • Are you willing to put in hours upon hours every day?

  • Do you have something you passionately want to create?

Read about the lives of coders and the questions they solve.

Does that sound like something you’d like to do?

Make a list of your dream companies, and talk to people who work there about what it takes. You’ll want to meet them at a meetup or conference or hackathon. Many of these events have nametags, and so you can scan for people you’d like to see. At the event, or at a lunch you’ve neatly arranged for later, it’s question time.

  • What of the job descriptions were actually required, and what was a very unique nice-to-have that got them in the door, and so on.

  • What it’s actually like to work at that company.

  • What the interview process at the company is like.

  • Would you make an intro for someone else? What would it take to get that intro?

Attend an intro class

See if you like it. This is a seemingly obvious step but so many don’t do it, and are surprised later when it doesn’t work for them. Take our Coding for Beginners course, or maybe Introduction to JavaScript or Web App Builder. They’ll provide great insight into what development work is like. Do you enjoy it, or do you find it tedious? If you enjoy it, it’s worth giving it a go.

Establish connections with a few people at your dream company. It doesn’t have to be developers, but it helps if they’re connected to the developer team...or just decision makers at the company. The devs will be able to give more information relevant to what the role is actually like.

That’s the experienced people. It’s also good to make connections with other people like you who are also learning.
